Frequently Asked Questions - Gabbiano Clothes Airer Cherry Wood
What are the dimensions of the Gabbiano Clothes Airer Cherry Wood?
When open and in use, the Gabbiano measures 175cm W x 67cm D x 105cm H. When folded flat for storage, it collapses to 16cm wide (without wheels) or 20cm wide (with wheels attached), at 67cm D x 105cm H. The folded unit stands upright independently on its castors without needing to be leant against a wall or laid flat. At 175cm wide when open, the Gabbiano is the widest clothes airer in the Arredamenti Italia range - wide enough to lay a king-size flat sheet across its rails without folding.
What is the Gabbiano Clothes Airer Cherry Wood made from?
The frame is crafted from solid cherry wood. The drying rails are powder-coated aluminium - 100% rustproof and non-marking. The drying grids use a nylon easy-open frame to hold the rails in position. Every Gabbiano is handcrafted and quality-checked at the Arredamenti Italia workshop in Bione, northern Italy.
How much drying space does the Gabbiano provide?
The Gabbiano provides 30 linear metres of drying space - the largest drying capacity of any airer in the Arredamenti Italia range. This is enough to hang a complete family wash in a single session, including shirts, jeans, underwear, towels, bath sheets and bed linen, with room to spare. The four independent side arms spread laundry outward at two heights for maximum airflow around every garment, which speeds drying compared to vertical tier-stacked airers where items hang in close proximity.
How do the drying grids work, and can they be used independently?
The Gabbiano has four side arm drying grids - two on each side of the frame, one upper and one lower. Each operates fully independently and can be folded open or closed in any order without affecting the others. For a small load, open one or two arms. For a full wash, deploy all four. As items dry and are removed, individual arms can be folded back while the rest of the airer stays in use. The nylon grid frames are described as "easy-open" - they deploy with a single motion and lock in place without additional steps.
Does the Gabbiano have castors, and can they be locked?
Yes - the Gabbiano is fitted with four lockable, non-scratch castors. When unlocked, the airer rolls freely on hard floor surfaces without marking timber, tiles or polished concrete. When locked, the airer is held firmly in position during loading and drying. Engage the castor brakes with your foot to lock; release to roll. The castors also allow the folded airer to be wheeled into a storage position without lifting.
What is the peg basket on the Gabbiano and how does it work?
The Gabbiano includes an integrated swivelling peg basket - a container that attaches to the frame and rotates to face you as you work around the airer, keeping pegs accessible at all times without a separate peg bag. From the images, the peg basket is a white container mounted on the upper cross-rail of the frame between the two side arms.
Can the Pellikano sheet attachment be used with the Gabbiano?
Yes - the Gabbiano is specifically designed to be compatible with the Pellikano Clothes Airer Attachment for Sheets. The Pellikano clips directly onto the Gabbiano's frame and adds four 166cm drying rails - providing an additional 6.5 linear metres of dedicated space for king-size sheets, doona covers, bath sheets and oversized items. Two Pellikano attachments can be used simultaneously, one on each side of the Gabbiano, bringing the combined drying capacity to 43 linear metres. The Pellikano is sold separately.
What is the difference between the Gabbiano White and the Gabbiano Cherry Wood?
Both versions are identical in dimensions, drying capacity, mechanism, peg basket and Pellikano compatibility. The only difference is the frame finish. The Cherry Wood version features a warm cherry wood frame that deepens in tone over time - suited to laundries where the airer is a visible design feature. The White version features a solid beechwood frame finished in white for a clean, minimal aesthetic. Both are compatible with the Pellikano sheet attachment.
How does the Gabbiano fold and store?
To fold the Gabbiano, close all four side arm grids flat against the frame, then collapse the cross-brace base inward until the unit is 16cm wide (without wheels) or 20cm wide (with wheels). The airer stands upright independently when folded and can be rolled into a storage position on its castors. At this folded width, it fits behind most standard internal doors, alongside a washing machine, or in a slim laundry alcove without needing to be dismantled.
Does the Gabbiano require assembly?
Minimal assembly is required - the Gabbiano is delivered pre-assembled and the only step before first use is attaching the four castors to the base of the frame. No specialist tools are required. Once the castors are attached, the airer is ready to use.
How does the Gabbiano compare to the Aliante Clothes Airer?
Both are Arredamenti Italia freestanding clothes airers on lockable castors with four independent side arms, a swivelling peg basket, and a slim folded profile. The key differences are size and compatibility. The Gabbiano is wider open (175cm vs 132cm), provides more drying space (30m vs 24m), weighs more (11kg vs lighter), and is the only model in the range compatible with the Pellikano sheet attachment. The Aliante is a better fit for households that want high capacity in a slightly more compact open footprint. The Gabbiano is the better choice for larger households, those who dry sheets and bulky linen regularly, or anyone wanting to expand capacity further with the Pellikano attachment.
Is the Gabbiano suitable for indoor use in Australia?
Yes - the Gabbiano is designed for indoor use and performs best in a well-ventilated laundry, living space or covered area. The rustproof aluminium rails and solid cherry wood frame make it durable in laundry environments. It is not designed for unsheltered outdoor use.
How do I care for and clean the Gabbiano Clothes Airer Cherry Wood?
The cherry wood frame can be wiped with a dry or lightly damp cloth to remove dust and surface marks. Avoid soaking the timber or using abrasive or chemical cleaners. The cherry wood will gradually deepen in warmth and tone over time with normal use - this is characteristic of the timber. The powder-coated aluminium rails are rustproof and require only occasional wiping with a damp cloth to remove detergent residue or lint. The nylon grid frames and peg basket can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. The castors require no maintenance under normal household use.
