Our 10 favourite wall-mounted drying racks, ranked

Wall-mounted airers reclaim every inch of floor space — critical in laundries, ensuites and small Perth apartments. These are the 10 we trust most, ranked across capacity, material durability and how well they disappear when folded flat.

Karim 3 Tier Wall Mounted Clothes Airer White #1
OUR #1 PICK

Karim 3 Tier Wall Mounted Clothes Airer White

$349.00

The Karim is the airer our Perth showroom staff personally use at home. Three wide tiers fold flat against the wall when not in use, the white finish disappears into most laundries, and the matte-steel build feels reassuringly heavy when you lean a load of wet towels on it.

What we love

  • Folds completely flat against the wall
  • Three full-width tiers hold a king-size sheet
  • Heavy steel frame won’t sag mid-load

Consider this

  • Requires drilling into a load-bearing wall
  • White finish needs occasional wipe-down

Style

Wall-mounted, fold-down

Material

Powder-coated steel

Capacity

≈18m drying line

Footprint

Folds flat to 8cm

Best for: Households doing 3+ loads a week who want a permanent, foldaway solution in a dedicated laundry.
Rialto 2 Tier Wall Mounted Airer With Cover #2
PREMIUM PICK

Rialto 2 Tier Wall Mounted Airer With Cover

$499.00

The Rialto is the only airer in our range that closes into a wall-mounted cabinet — ideal if your washing line lives in an open-plan living area. Sealed cover, two tiers, and a finish that looks more like joinery than laundry hardware.

What we love

  • Cover hides the airer completely when closed
  • Looks like cabinetry, not a clothes rack
  • Wide tiers handle shirts on hangers

Consider this

  • Premium price point
  • Heaviest to install — plan studs carefully

Style

Wall-mounted, covered

Material

MDF cover + steel rails

Capacity

≈12m drying line

Footprint

Cabinet 70 × 90cm

Best for: Open-plan apartments and Euro-laundries where the airer must look like furniture when closed.
Karim 3 Tier Wall Mounted Clothes Airer Cherry Wood #3
BEST FOR WARMER INTERIORS

Karim 3 Tier Wall Mounted Clothes Airer Cherry Wood

$349.00

Same engineering as our #1 pick, with a stained cherry-wood front that blends into hallways, bedrooms and warmer-toned laundries. We sell more of this finish to apartment buyers than any other.

What we love

  • Cherry stain warms up minimalist spaces
  • Same three-tier capacity as the white version
  • Folds flat to 8cm — visually disappears

Consider this

  • Wood finish needs occasional re-oiling
  • Slightly heavier than the white model

Style

Wall-mounted, fold-down

Material

Stained beechwood + steel

Capacity

≈18m drying line

Footprint

Folds flat to 8cm

Best for: Renovations and homes with timber-finish kitchens or open-plan living.
Off the Wall Foldaway 3 Tier Airer #4
BEST VALUE

Off the Wall Foldaway 3 Tier Airer

$219.95

Three tiers, foldaway frame, sub-$220 price tag — this is the airer we suggest first when budget matters but a renter is committed to drilling into a wall.

What we love

  • Three tiers under $220
  • Lightweight steel — single-person install
  • Wider rail spacing than most competitors

Consider this

  • White powder-coat can show wear at hinges
  • Not as flush against wall as the Karim

Style

Wall-mounted, fold-down

Material

Powder-coated steel

Capacity

≈16m drying line

Footprint

Folds to ~10cm

Best for: First-home buyers and budget-led renovators who still want a serious capacity airer.
Leifheit Telegant Plus 100 Wall Mounted Clothes Airer White #5
GERMAN ENGINEERING

Leifheit Telegant Plus 100 Wall Mounted Clothes Airer White

$169.00

Leifheit has been making this concertina-arm airer for decades. The plus-100 version gives you a full metre of pull-out drying line on five rails, with a quiet retract action and a tidy white housing.

What we love

  • Five rails pull out to one full metre
  • 20+ years of European engineering refinement
  • Disappears into the wall when retracted

Consider this

  • Lower drying capacity than three-tier airers
  • Best installed at adult shoulder height

Style

Wall-mounted, pull-out

Material

Powder-coated steel

Capacity

5 rails × 1m ≈ 5m

Footprint

Retracts to 8cm

Best for: Tight laundries and ensuites where a slim pull-out beats a full fold-down frame.
Leifheit Telegant Plus 70 Wall Mounted Clothes Airer White #6
BEST FOR SMALL LAUNDRIES

Leifheit Telegant Plus 70 Wall Mounted Clothes Airer White

$139.00

The 70cm sibling of our Telegant 100 pick — ideal where wall space is genuinely tight. Five rails of 70cm hidden behind a slim housing that’s smaller than a power-point cover when retracted.

What we love

  • Smallest wall footprint in the range
  • Same five-rail concertina pull-out
  • Quiet, dampened retract action

Consider this

  • Only suits small loads (think a load of work shirts)
  • Not deep enough for towels

Style

Wall-mounted, pull-out

Material

Powder-coated steel

Capacity

5 rails × 0.7m ≈ 3.5m

Footprint

Retracts to 8cm

Best for: Studio apartments, ensuites and tiny European-style laundries.
Suite Wall Mounted Clothes Airer & Ironing Hanger #7
MULTI-FUNCTION PICK

Suite Wall Mounted Clothes Airer & Ironing Hanger

$44.95

A clever piece that doubles as a clothes airer and a wall-mounted ironing-board hanger. We recommend it for laundries that have to triple-job as storage and drying space.

What we love

  • Stores your ironing board flush to the wall
  • Folds out into an airing rail
  • Under $50 — highest dollar-for-feature value

Consider this

  • Compact — not a full load airer
  • Single tier only

Style

Wall-mounted, multi-function

Material

Steel + ABS

Capacity

Single airing rail

Footprint

Folds flush to wall

Best for: Households that need both ironing-board storage and a quick airer in one fixture.

BEST BUDGET WALL-MOUNT

Wall Mounted Stainless Steel Concertina Clothes Airer

$90.30$129.00

A no-nonsense stainless-steel concertina that opens to ~80cm of drying line. Won’t rust on a verandah and costs less than dinner for two.

What we love

  • Genuine stainless — rust-proof for outdoor walls
  • Under $50
  • Concertinas flat in seconds

Consider this

  • Modest capacity — think delicates and tea-towels
  • Bare-metal look won’t suit every interior

Style

Wall-mounted, concertina

Material

Stainless steel

Capacity

≈3m drying line

Footprint

Folds to 6cm

Best for: Verandahs, laundry porches and anywhere humidity would corrode a powder-coated rack.
5 Rail Over Door Clothes Airer White #9
BEST FOR RENTERS

5 Rail Over Door Clothes Airer White

$24.95

No drilling, no holes, no bond worries. Hooks over any standard interior door and gives you five rails of drying line in seconds.

What we love

  • Zero install — hooks over the door
  • Under $25 — cheapest entry to wall/door drying
  • Folds flat for storage between loads

Consider this

  • Limited weight capacity (light items only)
  • Door can’t fully close while in use

Style

Over-door

Material

Powder-coated steel

Capacity

5 rails ≈ 4m

Footprint

Folds to 4cm

Best for: Renters, sharehouses, and travellers who can’t modify the walls.

BEST OVER-DOOR UPGRADE

Suite 2 Tier Over Door Clothes Airer White

$56.00$79.95

A two-tier over-door airer that effectively doubles the drying line of a basic 5-rail. Still no drilling — still under $60.

What we love

  • Two tiers — nearly double capacity
  • Padded hooks protect the door
  • Solid steel — holds a wet bath towel

Consider this

  • Slightly heavier to lift on and off
  • Needs a 35mm-thick door minimum

Style

Over-door, 2-tier

Material

Powder-coated steel

Capacity

≈7m drying line

Footprint

Folds to 6cm

Best for: Renters who outgrew a single-tier over-door airer and refuse to drill.

OUR METHODOLOGY

How we picked

Two decades of laundry retail — across Perth showrooms and an Australia-wide online store — shaped this list. Here’s the lens we used.

20+ years of laundry retail

We’ve sold laundry storage from our Perth showrooms since the early 2000s. Every pick here has survived years of in-store and online customer feedback.

Built to last beyond a season

We bias towards rust-resistant aluminium, stainless steel and powder-coated frames over cheap alternatives that need replacing every twelve months.

Verified by Aussie buyers

Every product here has live Judge.me reviews from real Soko & Co customers — not generic imports or paid Amazon placements.

Designed for your space

We rank across tight apartments, busy family homes and stylish living rooms — because one airer never fits every laundry.

FAQ

Questions our customers ask

Pulled straight from the inboxes and showroom conversations of our Perth team.

How much weight can a wall-mounted drying rack actually hold?

Most of the airers on this list (Karim, Rialto, Off-the-Wall) are rated to hold 10–15kg of wet washing when properly installed into a stud or masonry. A pull-out concertina like the Leifheit Telegant is rated lower — closer to 5–7kg — because the load hangs off a single bracket.

Always install into a stud or use the masonry plugs supplied. A plasterboard-only install will pull out under a full load of wet towels.

Do wall-mounted airers work as a permanent replacement for a clothesline?

For one- and two-person households, yes — especially the three-tier Karim and Rialto picks, which give you 15–18 metres of drying line. For families of three or more, we recommend pairing a wall airer with either a foldable floor airer for big loads, or an outdoor line for sheets and towels.

Can I install a wall-mounted airer in a rental property?

In most Australian states, you can install fixtures and remove them at the end of your lease if you patch and repaint the holes. Always check your tenancy agreement — some require landlord written approval for any drilling.

If you can’t drill at all, our over-door picks (#9 and #10) give you 4–7 metres of drying line with zero install.

What’s the difference between a fold-down airer and a pull-out concertina?

A fold-down airer (Karim, Rialto, Off-the-Wall) is essentially a clothes horse hinged to the wall — it gives you wide horizontal tiers and big capacity, but the frame projects 60–80cm into the room when in use.

A pull-out concertina (Leifheit) extends rails sideways from a slim wall housing. Smaller footprint and faster to retract, but lower total drying capacity. Concertinas suit narrow ensuites; fold-downs suit dedicated laundries.

Will the white powder-coat rust if I install it outside under cover?

Powder-coated steel is fine in dry undercover positions — a covered verandah, a garage corner. For exposed outdoor walls (Perth coastal homes especially), pick the stainless-steel concertina at #8 — the only fully marine-grade airer in this list.

How long does installation typically take?

Plan 25–40 minutes for a single-person install on a standard plasterboard-on-stud wall. You’ll need a stud finder, drill, level, and the masonry plugs supplied. Our Perth team can recommend a local handyperson if you’d rather have it done — most of our Karim and Rialto installs run under $120 with a contractor.
